Google is venturing further into AI-assisted interactions with the launch of "Ask for Me," a new experimental feature within Search Labs. This tool utilizes artificial intelligence to call local businesses on a user's behalf, inquiring about services, pricing, and availability. Currently limited to auto repair shops and nail salons in the US, Ask for Me streamlines the process of gathering information, saving users time and potentially reducing the anxiety associated with making phone calls.

The process is initiated through a standard Google Search or Maps query, such as "oil change near me" or "nail salons nearby." Upon selecting the "Ask for Me" option within the search results, users are prompted to provide specifics about the service they need, including details like car type, desired service, and preferred appointment times. Google's AI then takes over, contacting relevant businesses using a natural-sounding voice to gather the requested information.

Within approximately 30 minutes, users receive a summarized report via email or SMS, detailing the responses received from the businesses contacted. This summary includes information on pricing, service availability, and other pertinent details. Importantly, Google emphasizes transparency in these interactions, ensuring businesses are aware they are speaking with an automated system.

Ask for Me is currently accessible exclusively to US-based English Google Search users who have opted into Search Labs. Enrollment in Search Labs requires accessing the Labs icon (a flask) within the Google app, navigating to the AI Experiments section, and enabling the Ask for Me feature.

This new tool builds upon Google's previous forays into AI-powered communication, such as Duplex, which focused on automated restaurant reservations. While Ask for Me is currently restricted in scope, its potential applications are broad. Future expansion could encompass a wider range of services, including restaurant and ticket reservations, further enhancing the convenience it offers users. As an experimental feature, Ask for Me is subject to ongoing development and refinement based on user feedback and technological advancements. This positions it as a dynamic tool with the potential to significantly alter how users interact with local businesses.
