Singapore has been crowned the world's most innovative country, outperforming over 70 other nations including the United States, to claim the top spot in the latest Global Innovation Scorecard. The biennial assessment, conducted by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), evaluates countries based on a plethora of factors ranging from workforce education to the rate of new business creation. This achievement marks a significant rise for Singapore, which ascended from 15th place in 2023 to surpass the US and others in the 2024 rankings.
The scorecard, which expanded its evaluation criteria from 40 to 56 indicators this year, considers various metrics from organizations like the World Trade Organization and the World Intellectual Property Organization. Singapore excelled in several specific categories including business environment resilience, data transparency, the pro-innovation nature of its legal environment, support for startups, small businesses, and favorable tax policies.
Additional strengths highlighted were the ethnic and immigrant diversity of its workforce, openness to telehealth, cross-border data flows, and high broadband speeds. These factors collectively contributed to Singapore’s receipt of the Global Innovation Champion award during a ceremony at CES in Las Vegas, the largest tech fair globally.
Gary Shapiro, CEO of CTA, emphasized the importance of fostering an environment conducive to innovation, noting that freedom of speech and diversity are critical to catalyzing innovation. The high ranking on the scorecard not only celebrates Singapore's current achievements but also encourages other nations to emulate its successful collaboration between government and industry in driving technological advancements.
