Launched on December 11, 2024, On Call allows users to engage with AI-powered versions of renowned figures like former FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss and neuroscientist Dr. Matt Walker. This marks a significant expansion for MasterClass, moving beyond its traditional pre-recorded video lessons to offer on-demand, personalized mentorship.
On Call is accessible through a dedicated web interface and iOS app, offering a separate subscription from the standard MasterClass platform for $10 per month or $84 annually. While currently limited to two expert personas, MasterClass plans to expand the lineup to include prominent names such as Gordon Ramsay, Mark Cuban, Bill Nye, and LeVar Burton.
The AI personas are designed to provide tailored advice and guidance based on the user's specific questions and situations. MasterClass emphasizes that these are not generic chatbots simply pulling information from the internet. Instead, the AI is trained on proprietary data sets, including unpublished notes, private research, and exclusive expertise from each instructor. This allows for a more personalized and in-depth learning experience, simulating a one-on-one mentorship session.
While the initial promotional video showcased highly polished interactions, early reports suggest the actual experience may differ. Some users have noted that the AI voices, particularly Chris Voss's, sound robotic and less natural than advertised. However, as On Call is currently in beta, these issues may be addressed in future updates.
MasterClass CEO David Rogier highlights the potential of On Call to democratize access to expert advice, enabling users to ask questions they might otherwise hesitate to pose in a traditional setting.
