When Will AI Be Smarter Than Humans?
Rather than asking when AI will surpass human intelligence, we should focus on what AI can actually do. The idea of artificial general intelligence (AGI)—machines matching or surpassing human cognitive ability—has captured imaginations, from Hollywood to tech leaders. But definitions of AGI are fuzzy and inconsistent. Some see it as software that can perform any intellectual task, others imagine it making Nobel-level discoveries, or even functioning like a human in the real world.
In truth, AGI isn’t a clear threshold we’ll suddenly cross. Most AI today, including large language models like ChatGPT, are still narrow—they excel at specific tasks but falter at generalizing or reasoning like humans. They might write code or answer questions, yet struggle with ambiguity, originality, or tasks that require emotional intelligence or judgment.
Human intelligence isn’t “general” either—it evolved to meet specific needs in our environment. Intelligence exists in many forms across nature. Instead of chasing the myth of AGI, we should embrace a future of diverse, specialised intelligences. The smarter question isn’t “when” AI will become like us—but what exactly it’s capable of now, and how we use it to solve real problems.
